The Quiet Defence
Name the pressure while it's happening.
Spot & Stop Manipulation is a 30-day workbook: one common pressure tactic a day, the tell that gives it away, and a calm reply you practise in your own words.

Pressure rarely announces itself. A favour that keeps growing. A deadline that turns out not to be real. A guilt trip. "That never happened." Often you only notice afterwards, when the moment has passed and you still have no word for what went on.
Most people who use these moves aren't villains; almost everyone uses some of them now and then without meaning to. One moment proves nothing; patterns do. What helps is a name for the pattern, the moment it shows itself, and a sentence you have already said out loud once.
No workbook can make you immune to manipulation, and this one doesn't promise to. It gives you a pause, a check and a calm answer, so the odds are a little more on your side.
What's inside
- 30 days, 30 tactics, in four parts: pressure on your yes · pressure from status and the crowd · pressure on your feelings · pressure on what you know is real.
- Every day on two pages: the idea in plain words, an everyday example, the tell (the moment the tactic shows itself), two calm replies, and a short note on the research behind it. Then a write-in page: spot it, name it, respond.
- Weekly reviews after days 7, 14, 21 and 28.
- A before-and-after self-assessment, so you can see what changed.
- "My boundaries", a one-page summary you fill in at the end, to keep or share with someone you trust.
- "Your safety comes first": where to get help, and when a calm reply is not the right tool.
- Sources and further reading: 20 published studies and 8 books, summarised in our own words and listed in full.
- 79 pages, printable, with wide write-in lines on a white background. US Letter and A4 both included.
Some of the 30: the small first yes · the deadline that isn't real · the favour you didn't ask for · "everyone does it" · the guilt trip · the silent treatment · too much, too soon · "that never happened" · deny, attack, reverse · cut off from your people.

Who it's for
- You've come out of a situation where you felt played (a partner, a boss, a family member, a salesperson, a group), and you want words for what happened.
- You want a calm way to answer next time, without becoming cold or suspicious of everyone.
- You like to learn by writing things down, about fifteen minutes a day.
Who it's not for
- Anyone who wants to learn to manipulate others. This workbook teaches recognising and refusing, never using.
- Anyone looking for therapy, a diagnosis of a partner, or legal advice. It is an educational workbook, not a replacement for professional help.
- Anyone in danger right now. Please call your local emergency number first (112 in the EU, 911 in the US and Canada, 999 in the UK, 000 in Australia), or find a free helpline for your country at findahelpline.com.
FAQ
Is this therapy?
No. It's an educational workbook. It helps you recognise common pressure tactics and practise calm replies. It isn't therapy, counselling, or medical, psychological or legal advice, and it makes no promise about any relationship.
Will it protect me from being manipulated?
Not always, and nothing can promise that. It helps you notice a tactic sooner and gives you a reply ready, which improves your odds. It names tactics, not people: only a qualified professional can assess a person.
What if a calm reply isn't safe for me?
Then don't use it. With someone who has hurt you, threatened you, or controls your money, phone or movements, setting a boundary out loud can sometimes raise the risk. The same goes for steps towards more independence, like your own money or moving out: plan it safely with a support service; preparing to leave can be a risky time. The workbook says this clearly and points you to support services first.
Where do the ideas come from?
From published research on influence, persuasion and coercive control (for example studies of compliance, conformity, gaslighting and DARVO) and from well-known books in the field. Each day carries a short research note in our own words, and the full references are at the back.
